Valve guides are precision-machined cylindrical sleeves press-fit into the cylinder head that guide the valve stem's travel and control valve-to-seat alignment during combustion cycles. Worn guides increase stem-to-guide clearance, causing oil consumption, valve seal failure, loss of seat contact, and premature valve and seat wear. Installing new guides during a valve job restores correct stem alignment, ensures proper valve sealing, and extends the service life of the valves, seats, and stem seals that work with them.
